General Information

Hold a neighborhood watch meeting and invite a local Sheriff's deputy to assist with the program.

Equip as many people as possible with graffiti cleanup supplies such as rags, very fine steel wool, graffiti remover, various colors of spray paints, and rubber gloves.

For safety's sake always perform graffiti cleanup in small groups.  Try to have at least one adult male present.  Be aware of traffic and take appropriate measures to protect everyone involved from road and other hazards.

If personal safety is a concern during a graffiti clean up, ask the police to dispatch an officer in a marked car.

Use common sense.  Only attempt to remove graffiti that is easily accessible and there is no chance of anyone getting injured.

Be persistent!  Continue to remove or paint over reoccurring graffiti until the vandals get tired and give up, or move on.

Before cleaning, always get permission from property owner!

Organize Your Neighborhood

Steps to Organize your Neighborhood to Eradicate Graffiti

1.  Divide the neighborhood into small manageable areas of a few blocks.

2.  Assign an area coordinator who is responsible for identifying groups to clean graffiti during weekends and weekday evenings when necessary.

3.  Inspect each area at least once a week, and remove new graffiti within 24 hours of its discovery.

4.  Be prepared to increase your efforts during the warm months.

5.  Assemble and distribute the telephone numbers of key people who are responsible for graffiti cleanup.

6.  Solicit area businesses and residents for donations of paint, rollers and other supplies.  Ask for their help in clean-up efforts.  Residents Against Graffiti also has free paint and solvent available at 801 468-2182.

"Residents Against Graffiti" started when a group of residents in the East Millcreek area of Salt Lake County armed themselves with paint and solvents to clean up and rid their neighborhood of graffiti.

Salt Lake County patterned its graffiti program after this group in the spirit of community and government working together to combat graffiti and the negative influence it engenders.
